The
Montour Band originated in the 1939-1940 school year at
Robinson High School. The Band was first directed by Fred
Graff, followed by Jack Purcell, and then Jack Santa
Lucia.
In 1949, Joseph Picchi became the
director of the band, which had only 17 members. In order
to raise the money needed for instruments, the band
doubled as the Moon Run Volunteer Firemen’s Band. In
1957, a jointure between Robinson High School, Ingram,
Kennedy, and Thornburg created Montour High School. In
1960, the school moved to its new building here on the
hilltop. The band continued to grow under the direction
of Mr. Picchi, and was nicknamed, “The Marching Millions”,
which carried on into the ‘80’s. In the spring of 1983,
Mr. Picchi retired.
Band directors to follow Mr. Picchi included: Clem Rolin
- 1983-1990, Allen (Rusty) Pontiere - 1990-1992, Ron
DePascale - 1992-1997, Drew Podnar - 1997-1999 (missing
from photo), Jeff Lucas
- 1999-2003, Tim Lucas - 2003-2006 (missing from photo),
and our present director Cyndi Mancini - 2007-present
(missing from photo).
During the
37 years under the direction of Mr. Picchi, the Montour
band grew to more than 200 members and developed the
pride, reputation and work ethic that continues to be
demonstrated by the members to this day. Mr. Picchi
passed away in January of 2003, but will be fondly
remembered by musicians and squad members for many years
to come.
